Finally! It’s time. Team placements (to some known as “tryouts” or “assessments”) are just around the corner. Let’s get you the information you’ve been looking for.

Quick FAQ for those of you not familiar with the process:

Can any athlete attend the Team Placements? Yes as long as it fits their age/gender group - just fill out the registration form (links are below on the schedule) for the particular age/gender group your athlete should be a part of, note the date and time of the assessments and you’re set. Once you’ve submitted the form, you’re in! Now the waiting begins.

** Note ** We’re not fancy enough to automatically put that in your calendar yet, so please mark your own calendar!

What teams are being offered this year?

  • For the girls' side, we’re offering teams in 13U (Under 13), 14U, 15U, 16U & 18U

  • For the boys' side, we’re offering teams in 14U, 16U & 18U

How much will it cost? It’s free. There will not be a fee this year for Team Placements.

How many sessions will there be? Two per age & gender group. There may be a third and the coach will let your athlete know if it’s needed at the 2nd session.

Will I need to show my son/daughter's proof of full vaccination? Yes. We will be performing vaccination checks via the VaxCheckNS app at the door of the facility prior to each session.

What age group does my son/daughter fit into? Here are the age ranges found on Volleyball Nova Scotia’s site:

18U** Athletes born between September 1, 2003 and Dec 31, 2004 (16 months)

17U* Athletes born between September 1, 2004 and Dec 31, 2005 (16 months)

16U Athletes born between September 1, 2005 and Dec 31, 2006 (16 months)

15U Athletes born between September 1, 2006 and Dec 31, 2007 (16 months)

14U Athletes born between September 1, 2007 and Dec 31, 2008 (16 months)

13U Athletes born on September 1, 2008 or later.

* Athletes born September 1-December 31 of the previous year, on a current CCAA or USports volleyball roster, will not be permitted to play in the 17U age class.

**For 2022 VC Club Nationals & VNS Provincials, 18U Age Category ONLY:

  • A team roster for the 18U category can include 2 athletes born from Jan 1 - August 31, 2003, with the following restriction:

  • Athletes are NOT permitted to be part of any USport, CCAA or other Post-Secondary volleyball program for the current season (Sept 2021-May 2022)

What if there isn’t an assessment for my son/daughter’s age? If there is not a team offered for the age group that your athlete would fall under, you would register them for the next age group up. For example, if you have a 14-year-old and there is no 15U team to try out for, please enroll them in the 16U placements.

Can my son/daughter attend an assessment in a higher age bracket? The short answer is “Maybe”; we would recommend getting in touch with us first. Email dartmouthvolleyballclub@gmail.com and we’ll let you know how you should approach this request.

When are the Team Placements/Assessments taking place? Placements are happening between December 5th and 15th. You’ll find the schedule below for the particular age and gender group you’re registering for.

When will I know if my athlete has made a team or not? Following Placements, official offers are sent out between December 16 and 18, 2021. If no offer is received after this date, it can be assumed the athlete did not make the team.

If my son/daughter doesn’t make a team, what are our options? If the athlete has not made any teams, they are welcome to enroll in a recreational House League, should it be offered.

Ok Ok...Back to the Team Placement/Assessments. What will happen on the day of the session?  Here’s what you can expect:

  • Parent(s) and Athlete show up at Carrefour with athletic wear and Proof of Full Vaccination (POFV) QR code or official document 30 minutes prior to the start of Assessment

  • Registrants check-in at the door/lobby - registration volunteers will check if the player has:

    • Been registered and is on the list

    • Shown valid Proof of Full Vaccination (Checked with VaxCheckNS app or, if no QR code, visually validate)

  • If the athlete passes these checks, they will:

    • Receive a number for the coaches to assess with (parent or athlete will apply the number with a marker)

    • Enter the facility

  • If the athlete does NOT pass the checks, they will not be permitted to enter the facility. Any issues with that policy can be brought to the attention of the coordinator and/or club president/vice president

Parents can pick the athlete up outside after the end of the session

And when are the Assessments again? You might have missed it! See the schedule above in the colourful squares you can use to register!

Should you have further questions, please let us know. We’ll do our best to answer them in a timely manner but be advised this is an extremely busy time of year and only so many of us to go around. And we’re volunteers! So please be patient - we’ll do our best to help you out. We’ve all been in your shoes.
